Education & Schools

Perth and Smiths Falls offer a broad range of public, private, and specialized schools. A campus of Algonquin College is located in Perth. Within an hour drive, you will find the University of Ottawa, Carleton University, and Algonquin College in Ottawa. Kingston is also an hour from Perth and Smiths Falls. It is home to Queen’s University and St. Lawrence College. The City of Brockville is a short 40- minute drive south where you will find St. Lawrence College.

Area Interests & Recreation

The area provides a wealth of cultural activities that support the performing arts.

 

There is an interest in the preservation of historic landmarks and the community has a proactive concern for the environment.

Due to the rich natural attributes of the area each season offers a variety of sporting and recreational activities. Spring is a time of revival with canoeists and kayakers challenging the running rapids. Maple syrup flows tastily and is one of the most popular spring treats. Lanark County is the Maple Syrup Capital of Ontario!

 

In an area surrounded by water, boating and cottaging is a huge attraction. The area hosts numerous fun and family friendly festivals and events throughout the year from Trainfest to Ribfest to music and maple syrup festivals along with various local marathons rounding out the late spring and summer months. Children and adults can choose from baseball, soccer, pickleball, squash, rugby, golf (outdoor and indoor!) and basketball leagues.

 

The brilliant fall foliage is not to be missed. Although a slightly quieter time, it is still quite warm and tourists are rounding up their visits; usually with a stop in at one of the local orchards. Almost every community, large and small, celebrates the results of traditional and new agriculture through the many fall fairs and weekly farmers' markets.

 

Winter is no time for hibernating in this area. Cross country ski trails are easy to access and if you are an alpine fan, you can find what you’re looking for right in the heart of Lanark County at Mount Pakenham or nearby Calabogie Peaks; which is the highest vertical in Ontario!

 

Snowmobilers also enjoy miles and miles of trails. Hockey and figure skating are among the most popular winter sports and are readily available, no matter what the age or skill level.

 

Community activities also take place in a number of year-round facilities, from pools to curling rinks. Many choose to get involved through the efforts of local service clubs, or through the life of many churches.
