Another 1st for Orthopedic Patient Care in Our Region

November 16, 2021

Smiths Falls, ON: The Perth and Smiths Falls District Hospital (“PSFDH”) has yet another reason to celebrate its orthopaedic program and services!

The PSFDH team is excited to announce that it now has the Zimmer Biomet’s ROSA® Knee System (“ROSA”) in place bringing together robotic technology with industry-leading knee implants to help surgeons personalize surgical procedures for their patients.

ROSA is a robotically-assisted surgical system designed to help perform total knee replacement surgery. It includes features to assist with bone resections and assessing the state of soft tissues in order to facilitate implant positioning intraoperatively. Information provided by ROSA assists with difficult decision-making and enables surgeons to use computer and software technology to control and move surgical instruments, allowing for greater accuracy and flexibility during procedures.

“For everyone involved – surgeons, medical staff and, most importantly, patients – ROSA has the potential to offer a number of key benefits and advantages,” Dr. Mark Roberts, PSFDH ROSA Lead Surgeon. “We know the decision to have joint replacement is often a difficult one for patients to make, and we believe this type of technology has the potential to make it an easier one moving forward.”

“The amazing support of the Perth and Smiths Falls District Hospital Foundation helped our Hospital secure this technology for our Hospital and it is an extraordinary gift for our patients and hospital,” said Wendy McPhee, Manager, OR. “The addition of ROSA technology will improve upon the current hospital rate of approximately 95% of orthopedics patients returning home recuperating the same day,” she added.

ROSA is another step in the PSFDH orthopedics program that supports same day orthopedic surgery services for patients and community. While the patient will be back on their feet and home the same day, the hard work of rehabilitation and physiotherapy remains. The use of robotics personalizes implants for an individual patient will enhance the patient’s outcomes such as overall satisfaction and recuperation.

“With the delivery of ROSA Robotics, Zimmer Biomet is delighted to continue a partnership with Perth and Smiths Falls District Hospital that continues to put the hospital, and the community it serves, at the forefront of orthopaedic technology and care,” said Luke Windisch, VP & GM Zimmer Biomet Canada.

PSFDH is the 1st hospital in Eastern Ontario; 1st Community Hospital in Canada and the 5th hospital of all hospitals in Canada to receive this technology.

Dr. Mark Roberts, PSFDH Orthopedic Surgeon and ROSA Knee System Lead, is planning the first procedure for Wednesday, November 17, 2021.
