Laboratory & Infection Prevention & Control
Clinical Laboratory Services
The Perth and Smiths Falls District Hospital is well served by comprehensive, patient safety oriented clinical laboratory services.
With an excellent Quality Management Program in place and a commitment to ensuring good laboratory practices, highly skilled Medical Laboratory Technologists provide timely and accurate results using the latest technological advances in Chemistry, Hematology, Transfusion Medicine and Microbiology. The Clinical Laboratory also works in collaboration with regional partners to ensure that specilized laboratory testing services are available through a well established referral process.
In 2008 the Laboratory received the highest possible award from peers in the form of a five year certification from the Ontario Laboratory Accreditation (OLA) serivce under the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care Laboratory Licensing Branch.
Infection Prevention & Control
The goal of the Infection Prevention & Control program is to continuously monitor patients to reduce the risk of acquiring, or spreading an infection while in hospital. This is especially important for our patients who have weakened immune systems. Occasionally, special steps must be taken to achieve this goal, this is called, “Additional Precautions”. You can do your part by ensuring that you and everyone that comes in contact with you, or anything in your room, performs hand hygiene with soap and water or alcohol foam.
Visitors may be limited or asked to participate with these precautions such as wearing a gown, mask, or gloves.
It is important to remember when isolation is necessary, it is done to isolate the “bug” and not the person.
