Patient Stories

Perth and Smiths Falls District Hospital often receives cards, notes and letters from both patients and families. Here are just a few of the recent expressions of appreciation. Please note that names have been removed to protect privacy.

Dear (Letter to) Editor:

This week I had the opportunity to experience first-hand the stellar service that is provided by the emergency room staff of the Smiths Falls Community Hospital. A minor medical issue brought me to the hospital’s emergency department on my way home from work at 5:30 in the evening. During the mere 90 minutes I spent in emerge before my issue was resolved, everyone who dealt with me — from the admitting clerk to the triage nurse to the on-duty doctor — was kind, capable and efficient. I left the hospital feeling very fortunate to live in a community with such good hospital care. All too often, one hears complaints from local citizens about the state of health care, particularly wait times in emerge. Where I work in Ottawa, the average emerge wait time can be anywhere up to six hours for minor medical issues. Hat’s off to the emerge staff at the Smiths Falls hospital and thank you for taking such good care of this town’s citizens.

Sincerely,

Grateful Patient

Dear Perth and Smiths Falls District Hospital,

I had the misfortune to break an arm bone on January 5 and was treated in Emergency at Smiths Falls Site where I reside.

The service I received was better than excellent…from triage to imaging to the physician and nursing staff. I walked in the door at 3 p.m. and walked out with my arm set and casted at 5 p.m..

Everyone, and especially the ER doctor and nurse, were compassionate, informative, and efficient in the treatment they provided. This same helpful service was continued a week later by Dr. Anderson and the technician at the GWM Hospital Site.

I was very impressed by the whole experience.

Best regards,

Grateful Patient

Dear Sir/Madam:

I would like very much to thank all the staff on the orthopaedic floor of the GWM Site for the excellent care that I received.

I am 67 years old and in January 2011, Dr. Roberts and his surgical team did a double knee replacement because I had bone loss from arthritis. I now have two straight legs for the first time in years. This operation has given me a new lease on life.

You have a very caring staff. I voiced a wish for vanilla yogurt and received some every day. One of the young nurses even washed out my elastic socks after she put on my new ones. These little things meant a lot to me. There were so many people on day and night staff and I cannot remember their names, but wish to thank them all.

Please thank everyone for my undying gratitude and a job well done. You have a wonderful hospital in Perth.

Yours truly,

Grateful Patient

Dear Sir/Madam:

Once again I am writing to you on behalf of my wife. I brought her to the emergency ward last evening feeling very poorly and with extremely high blood pressure.

The emergency ward staff performed magnificently on her behalf, reduced her blood pressure and generally made her feel wanted.

Sincerely,

Grateful Family Member

Dear Sir:

It is my pleasure to report to you the following:

Yesterday, I brought my wife to the emergency department of your hospital, as a result of multiple complaints.

She was attended by a young physician. I have attended many similar inspections by a number of physicians, but never have I seen such a thorough and sympathetic inspection.

As we used to say when playing marbles, “she’s a keeper!”

Yours very truly,

Grateful Family Member

p.s. I am not aware what percentage of medical success is due to competence vs. compassion, but this young physician exemplified both.

Dear Perth and Smiths Falls District Hospital,

This letter is written to express the gratitude we have to the nurses of the main and 2nd floor, Smiths Falls Site.

Our vigil over our wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, was most comforted by their care and compassion, carried out with utmost dignity.

We want you to know the excellent attention we received. Their never-ending support made the unbearable – bearable.

People can say what they want about the health care system, but we know to be true the great service received at the Smiths Falls Site.

Sincerely,

Grateful Family

To the Nurses of the Main and 2nd Floor (SF Site):

We will never be able to express our gratitude for the care and compassion you showed for our family member; our wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. You kept her comfortable and always with dignity.

Thank you for caring for us also. For the endless posts of coffee served, offering a place to rest, you were forever by our side.

Please take some time for yourself, so that you may continue to care for others. We will never forget the kindness you have shown us.

Sincerely,

Grateful Family

Dear Sir:

On March 23, I had gallbladder survey at the GWM Site of your hospital. From the time I arrived at 9:00 a.m until I left at 3:30 p.m., anyone I came in contact with was not only professional, but very courteous and friendly.

My nurse for the pre and post op was wonderful. She explained what had to be done, and did so with a very caring manner. She is an excellent nurse.

While talking to my anaesthetist prior to my surgery, he explained what he was going to do and put me at ease.

My husband and I met the surgeon at his office in early December. He explained everything to us and we felt very confident with him doing the surgery.

When faced with surgery of any kind, it certainly helps when the staff, doctors and nurses are very kind and caring. Thanks to everyone at the Perth Site.

Sincerely,

Grateful Patient

Dear Madam:

I wanted to pass along these comments, about my recent stay at the Great War Memorial Hospital. I had a fair amount of time to see the front line operation of the hospital first hand.

When I receive a comment card in other business based on customer service (in this case patient care), it often asks, “was there any one staff member that made your stay more memorable?”. If I apply that question to my stay at GWM, I would say it is impossible to find one person who didn’t go out of their way to make my stay as comfortable as possible.

I was amazed at the speed at which the emergency department handled my problems. Without going down a list of names, not wanting to miss anyone, all the nurse and doctors, both in the emergency department and in the surgery department, gave me truly amazing care. I cannot think of or imagine anything these professionals could have done better.

Thank you and thanks to everyone that I came in contact with at the GWM.

Sincerely,

Grateful Patient

Dear Sir:

I want to send a letter of appreciation for the wonderful care I received in your emergency department on August 13. I was in excruciating pain from a kidney stone. The care was immediate and so compassionate.

I am a health care professional myself, although I always try to show compassion to the patients I work with, this experience reinforced to me how necessary it is to show that extra kindness.

The next day I had to return to the Emergency Department of my local hospital in Ottawa. While the care was competent, most of the staff did not have the compassion or human touch.

Can you please pass on to the wonderful three RNs and physician that were on duty that night, my utmost appreciation for their sensitivity.  As I was in so much pain, I did not get their names.

Thanks again from the bottom of my heart.

Sincerely,

Grateful Patient
