RE: Supporting the Needs of our Palliative Patients and Families with “Ruby’s Room”

Smiths Falls, ON – The Perth and Smiths Falls District Hospital continues to be the grateful recipient of wonderful support and gifts from families for various projects and initiatives.

Recently, a family undertook an initiative to help the hospital create a supportive palliative care space.  Having recently lost their mother, the family identified the gap in the end of life process.  With this in mind, the family moved forward with a generous donation to re-develop an in-patient room into a “palliative care” room.  The level of detail and consideration given to “Ruby’s Room” recognizes the needs that a family has when experiencing end of life situations of loved ones.

While the hospital does not have a specific unit for palliative care, the organization’s palliative care program is supported by two highly trained palliative care nurses.

“This wonderful display of kindness has already touched the lives of other families. We are deeply appreciative to the donor family for their generosity and thoughtfulness.  The need for palliative care services continues to grow in our community,” said Linda Bisonette, President & CEO.

While family and patient choices suggest that the patient would like to spend their final days at home, this is not always possible.  With the creation of space such as “Ruby’s Room” at the Smiths Falls Site of the hospital, patients are given the option to have the comforts of home with the necessary clinical and medical support.

“Ruby’s Room” is located on the 2nd floor of the Smiths Falls Site and provides a small kitchenette and living room space.  The location of the room allows for privacy and additional comfortable seating space just outside the room at the end of the corridor.

The official dedication of “Ruby’s Room” was held on Sunday, June 1, 2014.  Close to 60 family members attended the dedication.  Special acknowledgement was given by Linda Bisonette, President & CEO and Dr. Graeme Hendry.   Rev. Albert Hoppins conferred blessings on the room and those present.
