RE: Perth & Smiths Falls District Hospital Laboratory Receives Accreditation

Smiths Falls – The Perth and Smiths Falls District Hospital recently underwent a comprehensive and involved accreditation process conducted by the Ontario Laboratory Accreditation. The hospital has a full service medical laboratory department of the Smiths Falls Site and Great War Memorial site of the hospital.

Linda Bisonette, Interim President & CEO and Vice President, Patient Care Services & CNE announced today that the hospital laboratories have once again successfully completed a formal review of competence through the Quality Management Program –Laboratory Services. The Laboratories were assessed on 476 standards in each discipline (hematology, biochemistry, immunohematology, immunology and microbiology) and the hospital will be awarded with four year certificate which is the highest award possible.

Playing a crucial role in patient safety, Ontario Laboratory Accreditation (OLA) assesses the ability of a laboratory to perform the scope of testing for which it is licensed. This formal recognition of competence is designed to meet the ISO 15189 standards. These standards augmented with international standards for safety and point-of-care testing; national standards for blood safety; government regulation; and generally accepted principles of good practice.

“We are extremely fortunate to have such a dedicated, highly skilled and hard-working team in our laboratories,” stated Ms. Bisonette and, “this result clearly demonstrates the exemplary efforts of the entire team!”

Physicians need to be able to count on the accuracy of test results because approximately 85% of decisions about diagnosis and treatment are based on laboratory findings.

Dr. Peter Roney, Chief of Staff, commended the personnel of the hospital laboratories stating that, “to have an effective laboratory in place provides an important diagnostic tool for both the patient and physician. I am pleased with the outcome of this rigorous survey.”

The Ontario Laboratory Accreditation (OLA) system is based on a peer review assessment wherein a multitude of standards are assessed. The last accreditation survey was conducted in 2008 resulting in a full accreditation at that time.
