RE: Physician Turnkey Operation

Smiths Falls, ON – The Perth and Smiths Falls District Hospital Board of Directors (“Board of Directors”) is pleased to announce its decision regarding the physician turnkey operation proposals.

The Board of Directors met Tuesday, July 17, 2012 to further discuss a turnkey solution focused on bringing primary care to our communities. After much discussion, the Board resolved to support the proposal which had the best long term solution for primary care pressures for constituents in the Smiths Falls area. Following the successful negotiation of a performance agreement, the Board of Directors has determined to flow the monies received from the South East Local Health Integration Network in the amount of $300,000 to Guy Saumure & Sons Construction Ltd. The Town of Smiths Falls has committed to the project and further municipal contributions are being contemplated by the Township of Rideau Lakes, the Township of Montague, the Township of Drummond/North Elmsley and the Village of Merrickville/Wolford.

The Cornelia Court site, which presently houses four family physicians, will undergo extensive renovations which will provide turnkey space for up to 12 physicians. Lynda Hendriks, Chair, Board of Directors, commented, “The proposed renovated space to be located at Cornelia Court will enable the recruitment of additional family physicians in the future by offering office space that is of showcase quality.”

This decision fulfills the spirit and intent of the South East Local Health Integration Network whereby primary care will be enhanced with the development of a turnkey operation. The Board of Directors also based its decision on the comments and opinions of the community’s local physicians who are participating in the Cornelia Court project as well as those who are not. “The Board of Directors and the Hospital recognizes the dedication of the existing four family physicians to the hospital and the community and considers their input to be invaluable,” said Linda Bisonette, Interim President & CEO.

The Board of Directors took into consideration a multitude of factors and opinions for determining what alternative would best suit the long term health care needs of the community with the level of funding at hand.

Mayor Dennis Staples stated, “Council’s decision to support the decision of the Hospital Board was essential in the process of stabilizing the physician complement in our community.”

“This decision will go far in the long-term solution of family physician recruitment as the key barrier in the recruitment process is first and foremost the lack of turnkey office space,” stated Dr. Peter Roney, Chief of Staff. An interested new physician commonly has the financial burden of university and medical school loans and to offer space that has been fitted up to meet the needs of an incoming family physician at no initial cost will certainly be an attractive feature.

It is anticipated that the turnkey renovations at Cornelia Court will be completed by the end of 2012.
