Dr. Murty’s Passing and Patient Access to Care

At a recent meeting of parties concerned about and willing to assist residents with access to care given the passing of Dr. Gan Murty, the following points were made.  The group consisted of family physicians, mayor and representatives of the Town of Smiths Falls, the Community and Primary Health Care Family Health Team, the Merrickville/Smiths Falls Community Health Centre and the Hospital.

  •  We deeply regret the passing of Dr. Murty, and our thoughts and best wishes are with his family and friends as they mourn the loss of a man whose contribution to this community will be sorely missed.
  •  We completely understand the concerns, too, of Dr. Murty’s many patients who must now seek a new physician to help with their health care – and we are actively seeking short term and longer term solutions to address these concerns.
  •  The immediate situation for patients seeking urgent care will be addressed by the Emergency Department of the Perth & Smiths Falls District Hospital.  At this difficult time, we encourage residents to seek out this facility if – and only if – they require urgent and immediate attention.  Wait times may be longer than usual given the increase in volumes.
  •  Other care can be made available – as appropriate – through the Merrickville/Smiths Falls Community Health Centre; through the CPHC Mobile Family Health Team who are looking at increasing time in Smiths Falls; and eventually through the Smiths Falls Nurse Practitioner-led clinic.  A variety of referral sources such as Lanark County Mental Health, Tri County Addiction and Referral Services, Diabetes Education Programs, and Telehealth will assist the community during this time.
  •  A locum (temporary replacement) physician is being sought for the short term with assistance available from Health Force Ontario, and through the efforts of other clinicians in this region.  Appropriate facilities for a locum physician are under careful consideration and a solution will be found soon.
  •  In the meantime, residents who absolutely need a doctor are encouraged to also contact Health Care Connect.  Residents can use the web – http://www.health.gov.on.ca/en/ms/healthcareconnect/public to fill out a quick form with basic information in order to begin the process of finding a new doctor OR they can call the program at 1-800-445-1822 (available Monday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.) to begin the same process.
  •  For the longer term, active recruitment will continue to be pursued to secure additional full time permanent physicians for the Perth-Smiths Falls area
