CT Scan Official Opening Event

Smiths Falls, ON –  The Perth and Smiths Falls District Hospital is pleased to announce the official opening celebration of the CT Scan unit which will be Thursday, September 30, 2010 at 4:30 pm on the Smiths Falls Site (60 Cornelia Street West).  Larry Sparks, Chair, Board of Directors, stated, “The official opening is a milestone event for the hospital and we invite everyone to be a part of this celebration.”

While the public were afforded an opportunity to see the machine during the ribbon cutting for the new wing celebration in May of this year, this will be the official opening of the Unit.  “This a memorable day for the Hospital, the community and the entire region”, said Todd Stepanuik, President & CEO.  The official program will begin at 4:30 p.m..  Community members are invited to attend this event.  As part of the open house, there will be a reception.

The GE Light Speed CT (Computerized Tomography) Scanner was delivered in March of this year to the Smiths Falls Site and became operational in June 2010.  The total capital cost of the project, including the cost of the unit is estimated to be $2.2 million.  The service will be delivered out of the Smiths Falls site.  It is estimated that approximately 3,000 scans will be performed annually.

The CT, or computerized tomography, takes x-ray pictures through 360 degrees around a patient’s body.  The information is then processed by computers and transformed into a series of images showing cross sectional ‘slices’ of the part of the body being scanned.  Typically the unit is used for patients with a wide range of medical or surgical conditions and is a vital tool in diagnosing patients with suspected cancers, those with serious head injuries, thoracic or abdominal problems and for diagnosing strokes, organ function and cardiovascular disease.
