Hospital To Renovate Medical Center

Smiths Falls, ON – Things continue to be exciting at the PSFDH these days as another renovation project is underway.  The Hospital is pleased to announce that the PSFDH Board of Directors has authorized renovations to the hospital owned medical center located at 39 Drummond Street West (Annexed to the GWM site).  The project has a price tag of approximately $550,000 excluding taxes. The building has begun to show the ravages of age and it was recognized that there was a need to upgrade the building as there has been little tangible improvements to the interior since the initial construction of the building dating back to 1972.  Tim Carter, Board Chair stated, “This initiative is the result of a tremendous amount of hardwork and effort from many people.”

The site will undergo extensive interior renovations.  The scope of the work is quite extensive including: demolition, new lighting, new flooring, new paint, new millwork, new casework, upgrade to the HVAC system, etc.  The redesigned complex will feature additional examining and consulting rooms.  The renovation project also involves making better use of existing space so as to ensure an optimal working environment for the health practitioners.  This project will also enable the recruitment of additional family physicians in the future.  Todd Stepanuik – President & CEO stated, “Redeveloping this building is an important part to build our community in a positive way and demonstrates our steadfast commitment to patients, physicians and the community.”

Frecon Construction Ltd. has been awarded the contract. Construction is scheduled to last a duration of approximately four months.  To accommodate the renovations tenants have been required to vacate the building.  The hospital has been successful in making temporary arrangements to accommodate them at the GWM site during the construction period.

While a significant portion of the costs associated with the renovations have already been secured, there will be a shortfall which will need to be raised through a fundraising effort that will be launched in the near future.

“Plans really began in earnest about 12 months ago including meetings with physicians and administration about blueprints and space,” said Brian Allen, VP Finance & Support Services.  He added, “Reaction from the tenants has been overwhelmingly positive.”  Dr. Robin Kennie stated, “I am thrilled that the Hospital has rendered the decision to renovate the complex.  I am pleased that construction is going ahead and know that it will be a key component in future recruitment and retention of physicians to our area.”

Dr. Alain Gauthier stated, “We are very excited that the renovation is getting underway.  Certainly, this will be a draw for new physicians.  We look forward to the completion of the project, which will benefit our patients and the community.”
