Perth & Smiths Falls District Hospital recognized as High Performing Hospital in Acute and Emergency Care Service Delivery

SMITHS FALLS, ON – The Perth & Smiths Falls District Hospital was again recognized as a ‘High Performing’ Hospital in the Hospital Report Series:2007 released by the Ontario Hospital Association on August 24th 2007. This is the second time the hospital has earned this distinction since the inception of the high performing award in 2005.

The Hospital Report Series is an ongoing project that assesses hospital performance in Ontario. In its ninth year, the Series has received international acclaim as the most comprehensive set of publicly available performance measurement reports.  The Report Card process is a joint initiative of the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care and the Ontario Hospital Association (OHA).

Hospital Report: 2007 is based on 2005/2006 data and compares 90 hospitals across Ontario on information collected in four areas: clinical utilization and outcomes (patient care), patient satisfaction (how patients feel about their care) system integration and change (dealing with change) and financial performance. Perth & Smiths Falls District Hospital was one of only 10 hospitals in Ontario to receive the distinction of ‘High Performing Hospital’ in the area of patient satisfaction for Acute Care services and one of only 13 for Emergency Care. After reviewing the Report, Todd Stepanuik, President and CEO of Perth and Smiths Falls District Hospital commented “We are one of the highest performing hospitals in Ontario. I credit each and every staff member and physician. We all feel very proud of this accomplishment. It is indeed a tribute to their dedication.  Our continued string showing reflects their dedication and commitment.”

Perth and Smiths Falls District Hospital shares the title of ‘High Performing Hospital’ with only three other community hospitals in Ontario and is the only hospital in the South East Local Health Integration Network to be recognized as a high performer by its patients and their families.

Patient Satisfaction is measured via surveys mailed to patients who visited the Emergency Department or stayed at least one night in hospital. The surveys ask patients to rate their satisfaction level with all aspects of their hospital visit. The four areas highlighted by the Report are Communication, Consideration, Responsiveness and Overall Impressions which includes the patient’s opinion of the overall quality of care they received and their confidence in the doctors and nurses who cared for them.

Brandi Machan, Chair, Board of Directors, passed on her congratulations to the entire Hospital team for their efforts and contribution. “The Report Cards are an important indicator of how well we are serving our residents.  We are blessed to have such outstanding staff and physicians.  They have my praise.”  Ms. Machan also thanks the numerous patients and family members who completed and returned the surveys.
