Smiths Falls, ON – More than $1.5 million will be spent at the Perth and Smiths Falls District Hospital thanks to the Hospital Infrastructure Renewal Fund (HIRF) dollars allocated by the Ministry of Health & Long-Term Care earlier this year. This is the second year that the Perth and Smiths Falls District Hospital has prospered by receiving HIRF dollars.  “We’ve been very fortunate to receive significant portions of dollars from the Ministry and we are extremely grateful to them for their support of our organization, “said T. Stepanuik, President & CEO. “These investments in upgrades and repairs are investments in patient care.”

The various projects slated for upgrade include:

·        Emergency Department Walk-In Entrance at the Smiths Falls site – This will provide a second entrance thereby separating walk-in traffic from the ambulance entrance.

·        Emergency Department Isolation Room at the Smiths Falls site – This conversion will see the provision of a dedicated and functional isolation room so as to isolate at risk patients from spreading airborne disease.

·        Repalcement of the Emergency Generator at the Smiths Falls site – will replace outdated equipment and increase capacity.

·        Replacement of Air-handling System for the Emergency department, Lab and Dialysis areas at the Smiths Falls site– to improve air exchanges and temperature control.

·        Oxygen Auxiliary Connection Smiths Falls site– to improve back-up capabilities.

·        Construction of the Upgrade of the Electrical Sub-station at the Smiths Falls site.

·        Replacement of high pressure boilers at the GWM site

·        Upgrade to an Air-handling system and replacement of various windows at the GWM site.

“It is anticipated that construction will start in the month of October,“ Glenn Street, Vice-President of Financial and Support Services, says “and we have committed to completing these projects by March 31, 2007.”

“The HIRF initiative is in addition to the planning for the Smiths Falls site re-development construction project,” says Stepanuik. “We know that these projects may pose inconvenience in the short term and we are committed to doing our utmost to minimize any disruption,” added Street.
