New Drug History Project in Emergency Departments

Smiths Falls, ON – The Health Care Providers at the Perth and Smiths Falls District Hospital’s Emergency Departments now have access to the drug history of patients who receive benefits through the Ontario Drug Benefit Program (ODB) and the Trillium Drug Program.  The Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care is providing a Drug Profile Viewer system to over 150 Ontario hospitals of which both the Smiths Falls site and the GWM site of the Perth and Smiths Falls District Hospital are included.  It is anticipated and expected that the new system will eliminate, or at the very least alleviate, adverse drug interactions and provide more informed emergency care.  “The system offers a quick, easy way to access medical history.  The system will be a great tool in addressing the needs of our seniors’ population” stated Linda Bisonette, Vice President of Patient Care Services and CNO.    The program allows the emergency department staff to simply type in a patient’s OHIP number and in an instant Emergency staff can view their drug history.  The system is a secure web-enabled application and has been implemented in full compliance with provincial privacy legislation.  Authorized users will be able to view the drug history information.  Patients will have the right to withdraw consent if they do not wish to disclose their drug history to the Emergency Department.

“We have an increasing percentage of ODB clients accessing the emergency departments and approximately 18% of the 52,000 patients per annum treated in the 2 Emergency Departments are seniors” says Todd Stepanuik, President and CEO.  This is an initiative which will be of significant assistance in ensuring the drug safety of patients.
